Kitty Hawk is famous for being the location where the Wright brothers, Orville (1871 - 1948) and Wilbur (1867 - 1912) changed history by becoming the first people to have controlled, sustained flights in a power-driven aircraft. On 17 Dec 1903 they made a series of four flights, with the first one piloted by Orville and lasting only 12 seconds and covering 120ft up to the forth flight by Wilbur, lasting 59sec and covering 852ft.
The brothers developed their aircraft and ideas for aircraft design in their bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio and then went to Kitty Hawk to test these designs due to favourable on-shore breezes and steep hills.
