The meteor crater is located in the northern Arizona dessert and not far from Winslow. It is possibly one of the best-preserved meteor craters on earth. The size of the crater is about 1,200m in diameter, approximately 170m deep and is surrounded by a rim that rises 45m above the surrounding plains. Put simply this thing is huge.
It was made about 50,000 years ago when a meteorite approximate 50m across impacted the earth. The resulting explosion was about 150 times the size of the blast at Hiroshima.
To give you an idea of the size of the crater see the two photos below. The one on the left is zoomed back to show as much of the crater as possible. In the center is a white looking area (also visible to the left of Carol in the above photo). The next photo is zoomed in as much as we can on that area. On the right of the compound is a cut out of a 6ft astronaut and US flag.
Carol is also in the picture above standing on the observation deck only a very short distance down the crater. She is on the left.
