Driving through Kentucky we stopped a sign that read "Birthplace of KFC - Take Next Exit". This was a must see and even though we'd had lunch we just had to take a detour and stop by and see where it all began.

Born and raised in Henryville, Indiana, Harland Sanders tried his hand at several professions throughout his lifetime. He first served his fried chicken during the Great Depression at a gas station (petrol station) and later a restaurant and motel he owned across the road in Corbin, Kentucky. His outlets were on a main road running north / south and therefore had plenty of customers.

When the Interstate went through and bypassed Corbin he sold his properties and traveled the US selling his chicken to restaurant owners. They paid him five cents for every piece of chicken sold. The first "Kentucky Fried Chicken" outlet was opened in South Salt Lake, Utah in 1952 and from there the rest is history.

The KFC restaurants have recently (as of 30 Apr 07) changed to a trans fat-free oil in which to cook the chicken. I guess they are trying to appeal to the health conscious KFC eater.
