Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States but throughout it's history has made a name for itself for defying authority (particular the British). It is the smallest state in the US but it is densely populated.
Some popular attractions include: Providence, Brown University, Newport, Samuel Slater's Mill and Block Island.
During our North East trip we passed through Rhode Island ever so briefly. This is probably the only thing we would do differently on our whole trip. We were driving to Boston from Connecticut and decided to go through Providence. If we did the trip over again, we'd be going to Newport. Well I guess we've got a reason to go back to Rhode Island.
Providence was a nice enough town but I think we might have caught it on a bad day. We didn't feel comfortable walking around the area and decided to spend very little time there. We did stop off at Slater's Mill, which was the first water-powered, cotton spinning factory in the United States but otherwise it was a windscreen tour of the town and the state.
Newport is where we'll be going next time. Newport of course is well known by all Australian's as the place where we finally won the America's Cup. It was in the waters off Newport that Australia II, with her famous winged keel beat Liberty in the best of seven match-race. I guess that was back when Alan Bond was a good bloke.
