Officially called the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration
Center (AMARC) and located on Davis Monthan Air Base near Tucson, AZ it is
colloquially known as the Boneyard. The US military use it to store surplus or
retired aircraft (from all services), maintain them in a state so they can be
returned to active service, modified to become target aircraft or broken down
for spares for either the US military or international customers.
Because of the atmospheric conditions there is little to no
corrosion. The aircraft are wrapped in a special material to conserve them until
they are required in the future.
The Boneyard
Apparently there is over 4200 aircraft stored there but
it certainly seems like more. They just seem to stretch on and on. We did a
bus tour through the facility and then walked around a small museum just
outside the base that contained other, interesting aircraft. So many
aircraft lined up next to each other is certainly a sight to see.
