The first English settlement was made in 1670 but due to poor conditions they moved to the site of Charleston (originally called Charles Town). South Carolina officially separated from North Carolina in 1729 and was the scene of extensive military action during both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The Civil War actually began in South Carolina but more on that when you visit our Charleston page. South Carolina was also the first state to secede from the Union.
Points of interest include: Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie, Fort Johnson, the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in Charleston Harbor, Charleston itself and Cowpens National Battlefield.
This area of the country is simply beautiful and some of the towns and houses (especially the plantation style houses are fantastic). We spent one night at Myrtle Beach, which is a costal town that we would liken to a tired looking Surfers Paradise. We did only stay one night so we probably didn't see the best it has to offer and we were there in the middle of winter.
Our main port of call was Charleston and this is a beautiful old town with loads of history everywhere you look. We can certainly recommend it for a visit if you're down that way.
