Lake Champlain is situated on the border between Vermont and New York. It is about 180km long and 19km wide (at it's widest point). Apparently the length of the shore line is over 900km. Just think how big the Great Lakes must be, when Lake Champlain is not considered part of that group.
As we traveled west we had to make our second ferry crossing of the trip. It was a 25min trip across the lake, with other intrepid tourists. Unfortunately the day we crossed the lake was overcast and threatening to rain so we weren't able to see the true beauty of the area. That said it was easy to imagine that it would be like in the summer months.
Houses line the shore line and all accommodation in Burlington, VT (which is situated on the banks of the lake) was booked out the night before we came through. Not bad for the local economy. I think the local economy would rely heavily on the tourists and while the summer months would be spectacular. Despite the weather, there were a number of sail boats out on the lake and we could see power boats of all sizes moored around the lake. As picturesque as the area is, I don't think I'd want to be up that way in the winter months.
