The Luray Caverns are located about an hours drive west of Washington DC near the town of Luray. They were discovered in 1878 and people have been visiting the caves ever since. It's certainly not caving when you visit the caves as the entire pathway is paved. It certainly makes it easy to get around and admire the cavern system.

This was the first trip away from home base for the expanded Spinks family and Alexander was very kind to his new and inexperienced parents. We made a long weekend of it and stopped by the caverns on the way to West Virginia.

They are certainly very impressive to see if you have some extra time and are in the DC area for an extended period. There is an extensive array of stalactites (ones of the roof of the cavern), stalagmites (on the floor and mirrored pools. There is also the Great Stalactite Organ, which uses solenoid fired strikers to tap stalactites of various sizes to produces sound similar to a tuning fork. Very impressive when you hear it in action. The caverns are a constant 21° C year round so even though it was nearing freezing outside it was very pleasant inside during our tour.

This is actually a mirrored pool with a perfect reflection of the cavern ceiling

Thankfully this was when Alexander was still light to carry around like this

The cavern system certainly is big

Impressive to see
