Welcome to our home state while living in the USA. The history of America is closely tied to that of Virginia, particularly during the Colonial period. Jamestown, founded in 1607, was the first permanent English settlement in North America. The surrenders ending both the Revolutionary War (Yorktown) and the Civil War (Appomattox) occurred in Virginia. The state is also called the "Mother of Presidents" because eight US presidents have been born here.
Points of interest include Mt Vernon, home of George Washington, Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson, Williamsburg, the restored Colonial capital, Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington House (Robert E. Lee Memorial), the Pentagon and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Since arriving here in Dec 2006 we have seen a great deal of Virginia. We've driven through Norfolk on the way to the Carolinas and Georgia. Also driving west towards West Virginia there are a collection of local wineries and though while not quite the same as the Barossa or Clare Valley, we have had good fun tasting the wine.
Finding a house, purchasing our first American car generally setting up our new home in the US proved to be quite an adventure. Nothing is every as easy as you think it should be, even if you are living in another English speaking country.
There is so much to do just in our local area. Things we have done and seen so far include: United States Air Force (USAF) monument, Arlington National Cemetery, plenty of shopping at the factory outlets, all while managing not to get to lost driving around on the wrong side of the streets.
We have also continued our dancing with a local Arthur Murray Studio and even competed in our first dance competition.
