We headed to Williamsburg for a weekend in July to visit some friends and explore a little more of American revolutionary war history. Lindsay and Josh were kind enough to show us around Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown while we were there.
Colonial Williamsburg was the center for the government, education and culture for the colony of Virginia a long time before we were born (around 1699 - 1780). Today it's a living history museum, with all buildings, businesses, events and restaurants (plus everything else that goes on there) done just as they would have been back in colonial time. It was actually constructed from a living town and post colonial time buildings and structures were removed to keep with the period. Here re-enactors (or interpreters) work, dress and talk like they would have a couple of hundred years ago. The area is rich in revolutionary history and they regularly re-enact speeches, debates and the odd argument just as it would have happened.
They have done a fantastic job restoring the buildings and creating an environment where people can learn about their history. Certainly well worth the visit if you're passing down that way.
