Yorktown is located not far from Colonial Williamsburg. It was the site of the siege of Yorktown in 1781, which was a decisive victory by a combined assault of French forces and the American forces over the British Army commanded by General Lord Cornwallis. The siege resulted in the surrender of Cornwallis' army, which caused the British government to negotiate an end to the American Revolutionary War.

Surrendering of the British Army at Yorktown

While visiting Lindsay and Josh we headed to the Yorktown Victory center for a bit more history. Not really knowing what to expect, we were surprised to find a massive collection of both revolutionary war history and items specific to the siege of Yorktown. There was so much there it would have been impossible to view everything in one day.

There was also live demonstrations of a cannon firing, musket firing, field hospital, a little spy work 1780's style and a field kitchen.

Preparing to fire the field cannon

Officer quarters during the revolutionary war - still in tents but slightly better to the ones used today

Revolutionary war field kitchen - back then I think they were just happy to be fed

Explaining the different techniques and instruments used at a field hospital - it wasn't pretty

Ready - aim - fire

Unfortunately they wouldn't let me fire it.
